Alan Edwards

Coordinating Instructor: Digital Media

Bachelor of Computer Science – University of New Brunswick
Electronics – Ryerson Polytechnic
Instructor Development Program – University of New Brunswick

“Our course is a lot of hands-on. The philosophy here is that there is no stupid question – the only stupid question is the one that doesn’t get asked. We have very open and willing instructors who will really help the students get through any problems they have.”

Alan Edwards is the Coordinating Instructor for Digital Media. He helped build the program from the ground up using his expertise in audio/video production and visual effects, as well as extensive research and development in the nearly uncharted territory of virtual reality.

Alan started teaching organically. In the early days of Adobe Photoshop and Premiere, when they were not so user friendly, he used his computer science background to decipher the programs, and then taught them to designers who did not have his advanced computer skills. By the time Alan came to NBCCD, he had spent years teaching at the New Brunswick Community College and the Centre for Arts & Technology.

Alan rides the tide of technology as it advances through new and wonderful digital mediums. He started his career as a musician, and has toured with bands and played in orchestras. He has an extensive background in theatre lighting and sound, creating scores to Theatre NB productions such as Dracula, and later creating projections for Opera NB. This lead to soundtracks and then visual effects for movies and video, and eventually 3D and virtual reality design for a wide variety of applications. In 2017, he created a virtual reality experience of Lucy Maud Montgomery’s Wreck of the Marco Polo that was shown at the Lucy Maud Montgomery Institute at the University of Prince Edward Island.

A fun fact about Alan: Alan has composed music and performed it on synthesizers and church organs – playing both at the same time. He also loves to sail on his racing boat.
