Bachelor of Art – St Thomas University
Certificate of Advanced Studies in Ceramics, Diploma in Ceramics, Certificate in Photography, Certificate in Foundation Visual Arts – NBCCD

“I like working here, it’s different day-to-day. I like watching the students from when they start here to when they finish, and when they find that something that really sparks an interest.”

Leigh Merritt is the Studio Technician for the Aboriginal Visual Arts program, as well as the Maintenance department. He also teaches LEAP non-credit courses in Ceramics, with a specialization in crystalline glazes. He is working toward his Bachelors of Adult Education from University of New Brunswick.

As a student, Leigh became enamoured with crystalline glaze after a short workshop, and he continued to self-teach this discipline with the help of his mentors. In 2010, he had the opportunity to participate in the Medalta International Artists in Residence Program in Medicine Hat, Alberta. He made full use of their huge studio space, the Shaw International Centre for Contemporary Ceramics, and he work was shown in the Clay Dynamics exhibition in their Historic Clay District.

Leigh has completed an ArtsNB Creation Grant project on molybdenum crystalline glazes. He was recipient of the Heather Stone Emerging Artist Award at the Atlantic Craft Trade Show, and the Duffie-Crowell Award for the most worthy and deserving Diploma graduate in his class. His work has been exhibited at the Points North Gallery in Alberta (formerly Frames & More), as well as in the 2016 NBCCD faculty show Pride of Place at The George Fry Gallery and the Saint John Arts Centre.

Leigh’s Superpower: He can grow crystals on pots.
