NBCCD launches Honeybee Folk School

Fredericton, N.B., March 31, 2022 — The New Brunswick College of Craft and Design (NBCCD) is pleased to announce the launch of the Honeybee Folk School, a continuing-education initiative focused on regenerative living. The Honeybee Folk School extends beyond NBCCD’s formal academic offerings in fine craft and design to offer public, non-credit courses in sustainability and traditional skills, alongside popular courses in contemporary craft and design.

“NBCCD recognizes the importance of doing better, living better, and creating better.” said Dr. Carrie Nolan, College Director. “As an institution of learning, it is our responsibility to weave knowledge into our community that will benefit its regenerative practices for years to come.”

Three times a year, Honeybee Folk School will host Seasonal Gatherings, in a festival-style format, where makers of all levels will come together to be inspired, learn new skills, and cultivate community connection. Gatherings include half-day to multi-day courses in subjects such as knife-making, urban gardening, basketry, weaving on a loom, natural dyes, cheese-making, Wolastoqey language lessons, and more. The Honeybee Folk School also offers multi-week evening classes throughout the year, beginning the week after the seasonal gatherings close.

Courses will continue to be added based on community interest. The Honeybee Folk School will serve New Brunswickers and its visitors who wish to pick up new skills or learn how to live more sustainably.

This new program will take the place of the edVentures brand, which NBCCD took over from Fredericton Tourism in 2020. It will maintain a similar structure of evening and weekend workshops and courses offered summer, fall, and winter.

Honeybee Folk School’s inaugural seasonal gathering will take place in downtown Fredericton this summer from July 9-17, 2022.

“NBCCD is pleased to lend its spaces, expertise, and leadership in launching a folk school for Atlantic Canada,” said Dr. Nolan.

Honeybee Folk School’s non-competitive environment—no exams or final grades—celebrate the beauty and natural bounty of New Brunswick. Adults of all ages can find expressions for creativity in everyday life and foster a passion for lifelong learning.

“We believe it is important to see ourselves as part of the whole,” said Anna Mathis, NBCCD Manager of Innovation & Learning Design and coordinator of Honeybee Folk School. “Like a hive, we see a community that can work together to design a creative and regenerative flourishing future for all.”
