Petit Mode features miniature fashion pieces from faculty, alumni

Fredericton, N.B. – May 2, 2023

Experience fashion design in miniature!

This May, 18 NBCCD alumni and faculty will be displaying their own unique handmade, half-size outfits at the George Fry Gallery. Each piece will highlight the designer’s own personal design and style inspired by fashion history and Theatre de la Mode, a miniature fashion exhibition by French fashion designers that toured from 1945 to 1946.

Opening just two days before NBCCD’s 25th Annual Fashion Show, this show offers the opportunity for the audience and locals to experience more fashion masterpieces by a greater variety of designers, even after the curtains close at the Fredericton Convention Centre.

“Fashion encompasses much more than most people realize; it’s not all runway shows and glamour, it’s everyday choices, careful decisions that impact everyday life. For many, it’s personal expression that you showcase to everyone, even those you never speak a word to,” said NBCCD Fashion Design Studio Head Tracy Austin.

“This exhibition will help viewers focus on the designs and craftsmanship of the pieces. By having the pieces miniature, we have removed social concerns, and allowed the designers to create something truly meant for artistic purpose.”

The Petit Mode exhibit will open May 4 at 4:30pm at the George Fry Gallery and will run until May 24, 2023. The George Fry Gallery is open Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm at 408 Queen St., Fredericton.

Austin said many people have been involved, experienced, and impacted the history of the NBCCD Fashion Design Studio  — three studio heads, a dozen faculty, and over 150 graduates, to be exact.

As part of the program, NBCCD instructors teach craft techniques for garment construction, paired with design for both aesthetic and comfort needs. It empowers students to create fashion that is unique and prioritizes the wearer.

Austin said Petit Mode celebrates the impact of this unique program in New Brunswick, along with the many people involved in the studio over the years.

“Featuring, the NBCCD Fashion Collective, it brings 25 years of passionate fashion designers together: a Fashion Design Studio family reunion.”
