From NBCCD to the Spotlight:

Alumni in Reality Photography Show

Matt Brown ('10) Directs ShowFeaturing NBCCD Talent

NBCCD alumnus Matt Brown (’10) steps back into the spotlight as the director, writer, and executive producer of Shutterspeed Season 2, a reality photography competition show now airing on Bell Fibe TV. Hosted by celebrated photographer Mark Hemmings alongside season one runner-up Sam Kaminsky, the series unfolds against the breathtaking backdrop of southern New Brunswick. Two NBCCD alumni, Amy Stewart (’04) and Fabián Otero (’24), are among the contestants who face five rigorous photography challenges, with a once-in-a-lifetime prize on the line: a spot in the prestigious James Wilson/Mark Hemmings Photography Workshop in Tuscany, Italy.

Reflecting on the production, Matt described the experience as both thrilling and demanding. “We raised the stakes from season one by adding a time element to the challenges, which heightened the pressure for everyone involved,” he explains. The show’s success, he notes, is the result of an incredible team effort, including director of photography Lauchlan Ough, sound engineer Bruce LeGrow, and co-producer Marie-Hélène Morell.

For Matt, NBCCD played an essential role in shaping his journey. “NBCCD prepared me not only by teaching the craft of photography but also by equipping me with entrepreneurial skills to succeed as an artist in this province,” he shares. “Graduating with both a solid business plan and professional expertise made all the difference.”

Shutterspeed Season 2Creativity, Collaboration, and Challenge

Bringing the intense world of photography competition to life demanded careful planning and a resourceful mindset. Drawing inspiration from shows like "Blown Away" and "Race Against the Tide," Matt and his crew leaned into their creative ingenuity, proving that a smaller team could deliver big results.

While competition drives the narrative of Shutterspeed, Matt offers a nuanced perspective on the theme. “I don’t think there’s such a thing as ‘the best photographer,’” he admits. “Judging photography is inherently subjective, but the challenges pushed contestants to grow and step out of their comfort zones.” From mastering drones to working under tight time constraints, the series tested their technical and creative limits.

Collaboration was a highlight for Matt, particularly his dynamic partnership with host Mark Hemmings. Having worked with Mark as a photography assistant at Hemmings House early in his career, Matt describes him as a generous educator who fosters meaningful dialogue with the contestants. “Mark creates an atmosphere that feels more like a photography summer camp than a competition,” Matt reflects.

For current NBCCD students with aspirations in film or photography, Matt offers a simple yet powerful piece of advice: “Put yourself out there. Work on others’ projects and invite them to work on yours. Collaboration is key to building your reputation and your business. There’s room for all of us to grow.”

Balancing the technical and creative aspects of production is a challenge Matt relishes. “I always start with big, creative ideas and refine them with practicality in mind. It’s a balance I first learned at NBCCD,” he says.

Two NBCCD alumni made it into the cast of Shutterspeed Season 2, a testament to the college’s exceptional talent. “Our casting process was rigorous, but these alumni earned their spots through the strength of their portfolios,” Matt explains.

As the season draws to a close, Matt reflects on his favourite moment: the final episode. “We pulled out all the stops for the finale, but unpredictable weather kept us on edge. Thankfully, the clouds broke just in time for a spectacular conclusion—and we even made it to the ferry on time!”
