How FVA Online Builds Creative Confidence and Careers

From Honduras to NBCCD: How FVA Online Launched David Gómez’s Award-Winning Creative Journey

David’s creative journey began in Honduras through NBCCD’s Foundation Visual Arts (FVA) Online program — and has led all the way to receiving the Governor General’s Academic Medal, awarded to the graduating student with the highest GPA.

“The opportunity to begin my career remotely was what first attracted me to FVA Online,” says David. But beyond the flexibility, he discovered a world-class creative foundation that set him up for success — both academically and artistically.

Through a carefully designed curriculum blending technology, hands-on projects, and real-time feedback, David developed skills that seamlessly transferred to in-person studio work. “The most important skill I brought with me was the ability to observe and analyze with curiosity everything around me,” he explains. “FVA Online taught me how to capture those observations, develop them through a creative process, and turn them into real, tangible work.”

His confidence as an artist also grew. “FVA Online gave me a solid foundation and a broad artistic perspective,” says David. “It showed me that art isn’t confined by stereotypes or rigid rules. That gave me the freedom to be myself.”

The program also helped him discover his creative direction. “It opened my eyes to the possibilities in art and design, and I quickly realized my passion for Jewellery and Metal Arts.”

After completing FVA Online, David relocated to Fredericton to pursue his diploma in Jewellery/Metal Arts, where his dedication and talent excelled. In 2024, he was named “One to Watch” at the Sterling Exhibition, and this year he received the Inge Pataki Excellence Award, which includes a solo exhibition at Gallery 78. He also earned an honourable mention at the 6th Annual Emerging Artist Design Competition from the Canadian Gemmological Association.

David credits much of his success to the foundation built through FVA Online. “It gave me confidence as an artist,” he says. “The program provides a broad, inclusive vision of art that lets you express yourself without limitations.”

His advice for future students? “Don’t miss the opportunity. No matter where you are, this program equips you with the knowledge and skills to grow as an artist.”

CertificateFoundation Visual Arts Online

Foundation Visual Arts is a one-year certificate program that offers students a wide-ranging overview of the practice, theory and history of the visual arts and is achieved over two semesters. A solid technical grounding and an understanding of the conceptual framework of visual art is learned through a hands-on, project-based curriculum. Visual literacy and problem-solving skills are emphasized through courses in drawing, design, colour study and the creative process. Students have the opportunity to make products by exploring a selection of the College’s studios: Ceramics, 3D Digital Design, Fashion Design, Graphic Design, Jewellery/Metal Arts, Photography/Videography and Textile Design.
