Foundation Visual Arts: Surrealist Drawing Game (Exquisite Corpse)

Work with your classmates to create a unique character.! Students will take turns drawing specific sections of a mystery character’s body without looking at the section previously drawn. Students can use markers, pens, pencils, and more to create their unique interpretation. Once all sections are finished, students reveal their group’s creation to the class to learn about the wide range of creative minds in the class revealing the range of creativity.

3D Digital Design: Design a Character

Students explore the fundamentals of character design by creating a turnaround of a unique character. Students can work in groups or solo. Starting with simple sketches, they develop front, back, and side views to visualize their character from multiple angles—an essential step in 3D modelling. Once their turnaround is complete, students add unique details and develop a short backstory to bring their character to life. The workshop wraps up with an opportunity for students to present their designs and stories to the class, encouraging creativity, storytelling, and critique.

Fashion Design: Designing Your Own Outfit

Explore the mediums of 2D and 3D design through fashion! Students split into groups and design an outfit using the different elements of style and design they pull from a bag. They cut “cloth” out of large sheets of drafting paper to drape their chosen model. Paper and decorative materials are provided. Students must work together to imagine how their 2D design will translate to 3D. At the end of the session, the models walk the catwalk while their classmates guess which elements of style and design the group had.

Textile Design: Tassel Making

Create tassels to use as decorations or gifts and learn about the critical role tassels have played in history. Years ago, people would dedicate their lives and undertake specialized training to become professional tassel makers. Now, students have the opportunity to explore tassel making for themselves. Students learn the basic principles of design embellishment, and make tassels to take home.

Ceramics: Decorating with Sgraffito

Design a unique ceramic tile that you can keep for years to come! Students learn about the history of sgraffito, the elements of design, and are each given a tile to create their own unique design. Students use several different tools and materials to create their sgraffito designed tile(s).  If your school has a kiln, you can fire your tiles.

Photography/Videography: The Production Studio

Learn about the creative process behind movies and TV shows! Key principles of cinematography, including composition and lighting are taught, after which students storyboard and shoot their own short film using what they’ve learned. If time allows, final projects are screened in class at a world premiere!

Jewellery/Metal Arts: Client Project

Students develop an understanding of the elements of design and the consultation process behind custom jewellery. Students are assigned a client, a type of jewellery (necklace, bracelet, earrings, etc.), and a style. From there, they either draw or build the piece for their client, present the final design, and learn how to give constructive feedback regarding their classmates’ work.

Graphic Design: Mixed-Media Self Portrait

Using magazine clippings, construction paper, and markers, students create an abstract self-portrait they can take home with them. Typography, the elements of style and design, and the world of visual communication and graphic design will be explored before students dive into their own project.
