NBCCD AND FREDERICTON ORGANIZATION PARTNER TO TACKLE UN SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS

NBCCD and UpYOURS Collective are partnering on a new initiative to recycle the college’s used cans for charity and work to fulfill the UN Sustainability Development Goals.

The Trash to Cash project provides an opportunity for both local environmental and community impact in one action,” said Ang Perdue, NBCCD Sustainability Coordinator and founder of UpYOURS, a community-led recirculation initiative for social and environmental good.

Profits from the cans, collected from the Fredericton campus, will be directly donated to the Fredericton Homeless Shelters.

First steps have already been taken to reorganize the waste and recycling bins at NBCCD, which will allow for easier collection of cans. Cans will then be processed and refunded by Best Metals Recycling, a local recycling facility.

Trash for Cash will align NBCCD and UpYOURS Collective with seven of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as outlined by the United Nations.

The Sustainable Development Goals, adopted by United Nations Member States in 2015, outlines actionable steps that countries, organizations, and individuals can take to tackle climate change, preserve the Earth, reduce inequality, nurture economic growth, and improve global health and education.

This partnership will tackle the following SDGs:

Goal #1 No Poverty

Goal #10 Reduced Inequalities

Goal #11 Sustainable Cities and Communities

Goal #12 Responsible Consumption and Production

Goal #13 Climate Action

Goal #15 Life on Land

Goal #17 Partnerships for the Goals

“This project is a prime representation of the Sustainable Development Goals in practice, which emphasize community and environmental benefit holistically and prioritize creative partnerships in the process,” said Perdue.

The SDG Accord, officially signed by NBCCD last month, is the collective response of colleges and universities to the global goals. Learn more here.
