Creative Casemates

Handmade Work by Emerging Artists, Designers, and Makers

Creative Casemates is NBCCD’s seasonal retail space celebrating the work of students, alumni, and members of the local creative community. Located in downtown Fredericton, the shop brings together contemporary craft, art, and design while offering visitors a chance to connect directly with emerging makers and the programs that shape their creative practice.

From ceramics and jewellery to textiles, prints, fashion, and home goods, every piece reflects the creativity, skill, and experimentation happening inside NBCCD studios.

Visit us from June 11 to August 30 at 457 Queen St. on the bottom exterior floor of the Barracks.

Meet the Makers

CRAFT NB

Craft NB brings together a curated selection of high-quality handmade craft created by artists from across the province. All products featured in the Craft NB Boutique have gone through a jurying process, showcasing excellence across a variety of mediums and techniques. Through the Casemates program, Craft NB supports professional craft artists by providing valuable market access opportunities while connecting visitors with the rich contemporary craft community of New Brunswick. The boutique is expected to feature work by approximately 10–12 artists throughout the summer season

FREDERICTON ARTS ALLIANCE

Fredericton Arts Alliance will host a rotating Artist in Residence program featuring one emerging artist and one established artist each week. Selected by the Fredericton Arts Alliance Artist in Residence Committee, artists will work on-site from Sunday to Saturday, offering visitors a chance to witness the creative process firsthand. Working across a wide range of disciplines, including painting, drawing, photography, weaving, writing, performance, and media arts, the participating artists will focus on creation, experimentation, and public engagement rather than retail sales.

THE HIVE

The Hive is a collaborative art collective featuring artists Alina Karmadanova, Iryna “Eereen” Shevchenko, Stephanie Sirois, Maxwell Brown, and Emily Hebert-Kennedy. Working across a variety of mediums, the collective is united by a shared passion for creativity, community, and locally made art and craft. In addition to offering handmade artwork and craft items for sale, the space will function as an active creative studio where visitors can observe live drawing and painting sessions. Through rotating artist demonstrations and direct interaction with the public, The Hive aims to create a welcoming and engaging artistic environment.

Chroma Collective

Chroma Collective is a collaborative group of ceramic and textile NBCCD students including Theo MacGillivray, Astyr Johnson, and Julie Hickey. The collective will offer a selection of functional and wearable ceramics alongside woven home goods and textile accessories. Products include tea towels, table runners, napkins, placemats, bookmarks, cowls, and scarves. Throughout the summer, the artists will also present demonstrations in throwing, handbuilding, spinning, and weaving, giving visitors insight into the processes behind their work.

DESSERT DINOS – VENA CARR

Artist Vena Carr will showcase artwork and merchandise from her original character series, Dessert Dinos, alongside illustrations inspired by sea creatures, fantasy beings, cryptids, and other whimsical characters. Her products include colouring books, art prints, stickers, keychains, greeting cards, and paintings, all featuring her original artwork.

In addition to retail offerings, visitors will be invited to participate in an interactive “Create Your Own Dessert Dino” activity. Participants can customize dinosaur character templates and submit their creations to be displayed in the shop. At the end of the season, one design will be selected and transformed into an official Dessert Dino character, with the winner receiving a collection of exclusive merchandise

The Paper Collective

The Paper Collective is a collaborative paper arts initiative led by NBCCD student Ayla Pomroy, with contributions from Valdirene Oliveira and Caitlyn Robert. The collective will focus on interactive papermaking demonstrations during Thursday night markets, inviting visitors to experience the process of pulling handmade paper sheets under the guidance of experienced paper makers.

The collective’s retail offerings include handmade paper packs, stationery sets, leather-bound notebooks, linocut prints, and embroidered paper and textile works. By combining traditional craft techniques with sustainable and recycled materials, The Paper Collective creates functional and artistic paper goods while encouraging public engagement through hands-on experiences.
