Choosing where and what to study can be a scary process for many and takes a lot of deliberation. The following information is designed to help you get through the College’s application process as smoothly as possible. We’ll work together to assess your combination of learning and experience through recognition of prior learning and determine your admission elighttp://outlook.com/owa/serha.caibility.
Before applying to the College, you have to determine the applicant group you fit into. It helps you understand:
- The programs you are eligible to apply for, showing you the educational path you should follow at the College.
- The manner by which we will work with you to evaluate your acceptance into our programs.

Student Eligibility
Our program eligibility and admission requirements vary slightly for each group. You will likely fit into one of following categories:
Student Type | Description |
Regular Applicant | If you are in Grade 12 or a High-School graduate, or have a GED, Adult High-School Diploma or equivalent.
You are eligible to apply for the Certificate in Foundation Visual Arts (FVA) or Diploma in Wabanaki Visual Arts (WVA). |

Mature Student | You are 21 years or older at the time of applying and do not meet the regular admission requirements. You have training and experience in the discipline you’d like to study, making you eligible to apply for any of our programs. You must also show you’re ready to successfully complete the program.
After submitting your complete application, you may be contacted to assess your prior learning qualifications and an interview. |
Special Admissions | Your official Transcript of Marks has a modified English and/or Mathematics, plus you can show you are ready to successfully complete the program.
If you are in Grade 12 or a High-School graduate, you will be eligible to apply for the Certificate in Foundation Visual Arts (FVA) or Diploma in Wabanaki Visual Arts (WVA). After submitting your complete application, you will be contacted for an interview. Special Admissions applicants must apply by January 1. |
Non-Public | You have been educated in a context other than a public-school environment. Typically, you would have not taken any standardized tests and do not have transcripts that have been validated by a government-recognized educational authority. You must be able to show you are ready to successfully complete the program.
After submitting your complete application, you will be contacted to assess your prior learning and an interview will be conducted. |
International | You are not a Canadian Citizen or a Permanent Resident of Canada. You can show you’re ready to successfully complete the program. Go to International Students to learn about how you can apply.
Applications received after March 31st may be deferred to the next academic year. |
Program Admission Requirements
The College is unable to determine if a program will become oversubscribed in any given year. If a particular program does become oversubscribed, the applications that are complete and have been received by the College prior to December 31 will be given first consideration. It is in your best interest to ensure your complete application has been received by the College prior to December 31 preceding the academic year for which you are applying.

Bachelor of Applied Arts | The BAA is an articulated agreement with the University of New Brunswick. Refer to UNB.ca for admission requirements. Applicants to the BAA program must apply directly to the University of New Brunswick. |
Notes | (1) The $50 application fee is in Canadian dollars, applies to Canadian citizens and Permanent Residents and is non-refundable and subject to change without notice. International applicants pay a $100 Canadian application fee. See International Students for more information.
(2) If your official public high-school transcript indicates a modified level in English and/or Mathematics, your application will be processed under Special Admissions. (3) We accept a grade 11 or 12 interim transcript until your final grade 12 transcript is available. The minimum English levels of 122 or 123 are required and Financial and Workplace Mathematics 110 or Foundations of Mathematics 110. (4) Equivalent experience is determined by the College assessing your combination of learning and experience through recognition of prior learning. If you are 21 years of age and have past experience, you may be assessed as a Mature Applicant. (5) For applications into Foundation Visual Arts 2020, applicants will be required to submit a portfolio. Please read our Portfolio Requirements. |
Language Requirements
Proficiency in English is required for studying at the College.
All applicants who are permanent residents of Canada: If your language is other than English or you have attended an educational institution where English is not the medium of instruction, you must:
- Have your official Transcripts of Marks translated and notarized. Original copies of the notarized translated transcript must be provided(scanned copies are not acceptable).
- Meet English competency requirements with acceptable scores as follows:
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS) - Academic test: Minimum score of 6.0 with no subject test score less than 5.5
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): Internet based test: minimum score of 80 with no subject test less than 18
- Duolingo English Test: Minimum score of 100 out of 160
- Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE). Overall Cambridge English Scale score of 169
- Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL): Minimum score of 60
- The Canadian Test of English for Scholars and Trainees (CanTEST): Minimum score of 4.5 with no subtest less than 4.0
- PTE Pearson Test of English (Academic): Minimum score of 65 with no subject test less than 60
Any applicant who does not meet the English language competence requirements is required to successfully complete the English for Academic Purposes Program (EAP) at the University of New Brunswick Fredericton, or equivalent, prior to registration.

Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR)
Prior Learning Recognition (PLR): Applicants may request an assessment of prior work and life experience relevant to their program of study. Even if you haven't completed high school, you may be eligible for acceptance into the Certificate — Foundation Visual Arts program or for advanced standing in certain courses. There is a fee for this assessment.
Credit Transfer: You may have completed courses at other post-secondary institutions, which might be assessed as equivalent to those in your proposed program of study, and therefore may be eligible for credit transfer. Copies of official transcripts and course outlines that correspond to the courses for which credit is requested are required.
