Brianne Shea
Counsellor
Master of Education in Counselling Psychology – University of Ottawa
Bachelor of Arts: Psychology, English & Music – St. Thomas University
“There are many methods of supporting student success, but ultimately I believe it comes down to creating a community of care. NBCCD’s staff and students are vocal in combating stigma, oftentimes utilizing their medium to do so. It has helped create a culture at NBCCD that values diversity of experience, and it is my great privilege to continue the conversation with them.”
Brianne Shea is the College Counsellor. She provides first contact counselling service, offering initial support and referral to services within the College and community. Brianne is also the wellness resource on campus, creating opportunities for all students to learn through lunchtime sessions and student support groups.
Brianne once considered being a teacher, and even taught English language in Thailand. She now puts this skill to great use in teaching our student population how to nurture their mental health. Though she has only been part of the College since 2017, she has already strengthened our community by writing the Sexual Violence Policy for NBCCD and by improving access and accommodation services for students with disabilities.
Brianne is an advocate for the Fredericton Sexual Assault Centre. It is to this organisation that she owes her career choice as she was inspired to pursue counselling after volunteering there during her undergrad. She has also worked in a Fredericton group home and in the school system. After completing her Masters, Brianne’s work placement was in a private practice providing trauma therapy.
A fun fact about Brianne: She can speak a little Thai, a result of having lived in a remote village in Thailand where she was the only English speaker.
