Erica Stanley

Technician: Jewellery

Bachelor of Applied Arts – University of New Brunswick
Diploma in Fine Craft: Jewellery/Metal Arts, Diploma in Advanced Studies – NBCCD

“I really like it when the technique or concept just clicks, and you can see that in someone’s eyes or body language. I like the whole process of learning and do my best to create positive, safe space for individuals as they evolve and try new techniques, or visually explore personal concepts. I really like the self-empowerment that comes with learning; as new skills are gained, this helps generate positive grown in individuals.”

Erica Stanley is an Instructor in the Jewellery/Metal Arts program, focusing on Jewellery History and media studies. Her background in teaching stretches to the far North – she taught at the Nunavut Arctic College in the Jewellery and Goldsmithing programs before moving back to New Brunswick. She is also a yoga instructor, and has led the Nature NB Summer Youth Nature Camp as their Director.

In 2016, Erica received a Creation Grant from artsnb for her Body Guardscollection: amulets meant to explore and protect each chakra. They were featured in the Jewellery/Metal Arts faculty show Metal Sixin the George Fry Gallery. This same group of metal artists exhibited the following year in Her Metalat the Beaverbrook Art Gallery. For this exhibition, each artist selected an item from the permanent collection to use as a seed of inspiration for their own work.

Erica and her husband Aiden, a fellow NBCCD graduate, run the jewellery business Queenstown Goldsmiths, specializing in unique custom wedding rings. Their work is carried at Buckland-Merrifield, Serendipin’Art and the Beaverbrook Art Gallery Gift Shop. Erica balances a studio practice with motherhood and community involvement in the Village of Gagetown, where she and her husband are slowly but surely building their own home, stick by stick.

A fun fact about Erica: She is a firedancer, and has performed outdoors in minus 40 while living in the Arctic.
