Joanne Venart

Coordinating Instructor: Fashion Design

Bachelors in Canadian History – Mount Allison University
Certificate in Adult Education – University of New Brunswick

“My outlook on teaching is ‘Here are the keys to your learning that will help you unlock many doors’ Teaching is a collaborative experience, especially in the second year of the Fashion program, in which the students are designing their first collections. We are there as coaches and mentors and to help facilitate their creative journey and I find the process extremely rewarding.”

Joanne Venart is the Coordinating Instructor in the Fashion Design Diploma program, a studio where she has been teaching for over 21 years.

Joanne’s professional career in fashion began with costuming and has continued with creating historically accurate garments for museum exhibitions. She has worked with a variety of institutions including the New Brunswick Museum and the York Sunbury Museum, sometimes involving her students in these projects as practicum experiences. Her work has been exhibited at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery in the NBCCD faculty show Leap of Faith.

Joanne is an experienced Master Tailor and Dressmaker. She worked at the celebrated Stratford Festival, Shaw Festivals and National Ballet. Head of Wardrobe for Theatre New Brunswick (TNB), as well as the Grand Theater in London, Ontario, she was responsible for coordinating with designers and ensuring their visions became reality, much in the way she now facilitates the Fashion Design program. A designer she trained now runs the Wardrobe department at TNB, one small example of the many fulfilling careers she has inspired.

Joanne’s Superpower: She can accurately fit just about any garment – she has been told that she could cut a dress for a Christmas tree.
